World water Day and World Forest day was celebrated jointly by Academy for Science and Environmental Education,Mandya,Forest Department,Mandya and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board,Mandya unit on 23-3-2010 at placement auditorium,PES Engineering College,Mandya. In his Special lecture for world water day Dr.yellappa Reddy,a noted environmentalist and Former Secretary, Dept of Ecology and Environment, Govt of Karnataka said, the intrinsic balance between the water and forest is now well established by the environmental scientists, the healthy forest ecosystem not only produces the most water, but also the best water,he said. The vegetation and the plant litter on the soil surfaces with the help of ant hills and galleries store and keep water on the forest floor longer, allowing more water for aquifer recharge, versus surface run off. Present society is proud of technological achievements of soft landing of space craft on a distant planet, but miserably failed to control fumes - hazardous wastes, e-wastes invading all vital eco-compartments and preservation of fragile water supply catchments with all its eco- elements of bio-diversity,he described. Mr Siddaraju, President,Academy for Science and Environmental Education,Mandya in his key note address said, we have assumed ourselves that water is abundant and infinite.but in reality,it is less than one percent of water is fresh water and we are indiscriminately using this precious vital solvent. As per the data available about one billion people are deprived of clean water and about four million of people and most of them are children die every year due to water borne diseases, he said. In India the underground water table is dramatically depleting at the rate of five percent per annum in about 15 states and it is the time for us to get awakened and to adopt water conservation strategies. He appealed the gathering, especially the teachers to create awareness about these issues among the young minds. Mr.Munishivanna, DFO (Social Forestry),Dr.L.Prasannakumar,Asst Professor of Geology,PES Engineering College,Mandya, Mr Raghuram, Deputy Environmental Officer of Karanataka state pollution Control board were on the dias..Mr.Vinayakumar, DCF(Territorial forestry),Mandya was Presided over the programme.
